How to Spot a Sneaky Price Hike on Your Bills
Prices creep up quietly. Learn where hidden price hikes and new fees hide on phone, internet, power and subscription bills, and what to do about them.
Price increases rarely announce themselves. A few dollars here, a new fee there, and your bill is quietly much higher than a year ago.
Common places hikes hide
- Promo periods ending: the "first 12 months" price expires and the full price starts.
- New or renamed fees: "network fee", "service charge", "admin fee".
- Small rate changes: a plan goes up by $3 or $5 and few people notice.
- Auto-renewing subscriptions: services you forgot you had.
- Paper bill and late fees: optional charges that add up.
A quick monthly check
- Put this month's bill next to last month's.
- Look for any line that is new or higher.
- Compare the total with your plan's advertised price.
- Ask about anything you do not recognize.
What to do if the price went up
Ask the company to explain the change, whether your contract allows it, and whether there is a cheaper plan. Companies often offer a better rate to keep a customer who asks.
